Halloween Costumes for Big Dogs That Actually Fit

Search for Halloween costumes for big dogs and every listing will tell you it fits big dogs. The titles name Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, pit bulls. Then the costume arrives and will not close round the chest.

The problem is that size letters are set by each seller and transfer nowhere. On this page, one brand's Large is a 24-inch chest and another's XL is 34. Both are accurate. Neither tells you anything until you read the numbers underneath.

So this list leads with published measurements, and the one entry that does not fit big dogs is here on purpose, at the bottom, labelled.

Measure first. It takes ten seconds

One number does most of the work: chest girth, taken with a soft tape right behind the front legs, over the coat, not pulled tight. Add neck girth and back length (collar to base of tail) and you can read any size chart on the site.

Do not buy on weight. Two 70 lb dogs can be shaped completely differently, and sellers know it — the good ones publish measurements precisely because weight does not work.

What the labels actually meant

Three listings on this page publish real numbers. Put side by side, they are the whole argument:

A costume brand's Large and a clothing seller's XL are ten inches of chest apart. Most of the other listings in this category publish no measurement at all, which is its own answer.

1. T-Rex dinosaur — biggest published size

Sold as 7XL and 8XL, as two separate listings. The 7XL states a 35-inch chest for a 60 to 80 lb dog, and that is the largest published figure we found anywhere in this search.

If your dog measures under 35 inches, this is the one most likely to close.

2. Superhero costume — best sizing from a costume brand

Rubies makes costumes as its actual business rather than as a seasonal line, and it shows in the range: the Wonder Woman listing goes to XXXL, which almost nothing else here does. Superman is sold separately in XL.

Licensed character costumes also tend to be built rather than printed, which is worth something when a 90 lb dog puts weight into a seam.

3. Vampire cloak — most forgiving fit

A cloak that fastens at the neck rather than a garment the dog steps into. That construction is the reason it is high on this list: a chest measurement that falls between two sizes stops being a problem when nothing has to close round the chest.

4. Lion mane — skips the sizing problem entirely

A ruff on an elastic band with ears attached. Nothing goes round the body, so there is no size to get wrong.

For a genuinely giant dog this is not a consolation prize, it is the sensible answer — and it is the same product line we put top of the cat costume list, for the same reason.

5. Security hoodie — clearest size chart

Six sizes, each with neck, chest and back length published. XL is a 22-inch neck, a 34-inch chest and a 24-inch back.

It is fleece rather than costume fabric, so it is a gag that doubles as a jumper — and the listing says out loud that dogs of the same weight are shaped differently and you should use the chart. That is more honesty than most of this category manages.

6. Tuxedo — survives November

S to 2XL, vest plus bandana, with a D-ring on the back so a lead still clips on over it.

Not a Halloween costume, which is exactly why it is here. It is the only thing on this page you will use again in December.

7. Cowboy rider — funniest

The gag where a small rider appears to be sitting on your dog's back. Five sizes, adjustable straps, and the listing claims it goes on in about ten seconds.

Worth checking the straps sit clear of the front legs before you decide it fits.

8. UPS delivery driver — read the measurements first

The funniest costume in the search, and the clearest illustration of why this page exists. It is labelled Large, which on a page about big dogs sounds right. Its Large is a 24 to 28 inch chest and a 16 to 20 inch neck.

That is a spaniel. A cocker, a springer, a beagle. It is not a pit bull and it is nowhere near a cane corso.

We have left it here rather than cutting it because it is a good costume and because plenty of people arriving at this page have a medium dog and a big-sounding breed name. Just check the number before you order it.

If your dog is bigger than 35 inches

Then nothing on this page closes round its chest, and no amount of searching will change that today — the volume in pet costumes is in small and medium dogs, so that is where the sizes get cut.

The options that remain are genuinely fine:

• Head only. A lion mane, a hat, a set of ears. No chest measurement to get wrong.
• Neck only. A bandana, a bow tie, a cloak that fastens at the collar.
• Nothing. A big dog in a pumpkin bandana photographs better than a big dog wedged into something a size too small, and is a great deal happier.

Safety, briefly

Big dogs overheat faster in costume than people expect, especially double-coated breeds, and a full-body garment is insulation whatever it is printed with.

• Minutes, not hours, and never in warm weather.
• Nothing that restricts the legs, the mouth, or the ability to see behind.
• Never leave a dog unattended in a costume — capes and straps snag.
• Take it off at the first sign of panting, freezing in place, or trying to back out of it.

A costume that has to be forced on is the wrong costume, and usually the wrong size.

What we checked, and when

We harvested candidates across five search terms on 17 September 2026 and loaded every product page directly to confirm stock, seller and delivery. Measurements are quoted from each listing's own bullets; where a listing publishes none, we say so rather than estimating.

One methodology note, because it changed our results. Loading product pages quickly in sequence made eleven of twenty-two listings look dead — no title, no buy box. Re-checking the same eleven with a pause between them found every one alive and Prime-eligible. Anything we report as unavailable has been checked twice.
