Here is the thing that surprises people: delivery is not the constraint. When we checked, nine of the twelve costumes we track showed Prime delivery for the next day, and standard free delivery across the whole page was five days.
The constraint is buying the wrong thing. The items people search for hardest — the viral ones — are the ones that do not arrive.

That last row is the whole article. The product people are actually searching for charges for shipping and quotes a window that can land almost two weeks out — while the ordinary pumpkin cape turns up tomorrow for free.
The rule that outlives these dates

Buy from an established seller with Amazon fulfilment, not from a listing that appeared last month. Mainstream Halloween costume stock — hot dog, pumpkin, witch, superhero — sits in US warehouses. The same idea, dog-sized, with ears. For a big dog especially this is the one costume with no sizing risk at all — and sizing is where big-dog costumes usually go wrong.

The classic, made by Rubies. One caution that matters more when you are in a hurry: each size is a separate listing, not a dropdown. Check the size in the title before you add it to the cart.

6. Bat wings harness — next day
Felt wings on an adjustable harness with a leash. Worth it if your cat already walks on a harness; check the sizing gap first, because there is a real hole between the two sizes sold.

7. T-Rex, for a genuinely big dog — six days
Not next-day, and still fine at forty days out. This is the only thing we found cut for a dog with a 35-inch chest, so if that is your dog, six days is a bargain.

What not to buy late
The viral items. Specifically:
- The lion-mane carrier tote. Charges for postage and quoted 1 to 13 October when we checked. A lovely thing; not a late purchase. See the full piece.
- Bat-printed carrier bags. Mostly print-on-demand, none Prime, several adding two to five days of handling before they even ship. Why they are not what you saw.
- Novelty teeth muzzles. No clean listing exists in that category at all, and the survivors ship from overseas on October windows. We dropped that article for this reason.
If it is the week of Halloween
Buy something that goes on the head. A hat, a mane, a set of ears.
It ships fastest, it needs no size chart beyond a rough fit, and it is the thing your pet is most likely to still be wearing when you get your phone out. Both of our costume rankings put head accessories at the top for that last reason alone — cats and dogs.
Safety does not get a discount for being late
- Minutes, not hours, and never in warm weather.
- Nothing restricting the legs, the mouth, or the ability to see behind.
- Never leave a pet unattended in a costume.
- A costume that has to be forced on is the wrong costume — and a rushed purchase is the most likely one to be the wrong size.

We read the block rather than the Prime badge because the two have disagreed: one listing displayed a Prime badge while its delivery text said paid delivery on a later date.
